PhD bursaries
Studentships starting early 2010
A number of PhD bursaries are available at the Kirstenbosch Research Centre
(KRC), for South Africans, from historically disadvantaged groups. The
successful applicants will be required to undertake a project at the KRC and
register at a South African university.
The PhD bursaries (funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation) are each
valued at R80 000 per year for three years, for living expenses and
university fees. Project running expenses will be covered separately and
will be discussed with successful applicants as the amount will vary
depending on the project chosen.
Requirements: Good undergraduate grades, plus a lot of enthusiasm and
initiative. In addition, PhD applicants require a good MSc degree. Computer
literacy and good written and spoken English are essential, and a driver's
license would be an advantage.
If you are still busy with your MSc degree you may apply for a bursary,
pending the completion of your degree.
Study projects are possible in the following research groups:
. Taxonomy and evolutionary history in Cape floral families.
. Biodiversity, land use, and ecosystem services. Studies may deal with any
aspect of the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem services -
current research includes the ecology of pollination interactions between
natural and agricultural systems.
. Population genetics relating to plants and reptiles
. Aspects of Global Change in relation to biodiversity
. Conservation of Marine ecosystems
. Conservation Planning
Please email a letter of application explaining your interest in undertaking
postgraduate studies at the Kirstenbosch Research Centre. Include a detailed
and relevant curriculum vita as well as your undergraduate, Honours and MSc
results. You need to convince us that you are a good candidate and that you
will succeed with a PhD study so please include all relevant information.
