Writing a Successful Research Grant Proposal - More Practical Advice from Research Africa

Dear Research colleagues,

Greetings from the team at Research Africa,

Welcome to the second part of the "How to write a successful proposal" article by senior Research Africa journalist, Deborah-Fay Ndhlovu. As indicated previously, this 4 part series of articles is designed to keep East African research managers and principal investigators abreast of critical issues.

To recap from the first part of the article, which was published last week, leading funding bodies from around the world offer practical advice on writing successful grant proposals. Some of the issues covered in the article include focusing on one good idea in your proposal, knowing and adhering to deadlines, the impact of the proposed project including the dissemination of the findings, as well as various other criteria that need to be taken into account when preparing your proposal. Please feel free to regularly refer to the guidelines outlined in the article as you put together various funding proposals for your institution.

Donor interest is crucial for the sustainability of research projects in Africa, as there is only limited research income available from universities or national governments. However, funders are deluged with proposals. The competition is intense. As a result of all of these issues, your funding proposal has to be of world-class standard.

Click here to download part two of the Research Africa article which highlights some key tips and pointers to bear in mind when putting together a research funding proposal.

We trust that you will find the information contained in this article of great value and we welcome your feedback. We hope that this article will serve as a catalyst for debate and discussion within the East African research community and beyond!
