HERIN
Higher Education and Research Institution Network (HERIN) is a network infrastructure for providing connectivity services to Higher Education and Research Institutions (HERIs). The network was established by the then Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology (MCST) as part of the Tanzania Science, Technology and Higher Education Project (STHEP) which was financed by International Development Agency (IDA). Initially, the project connected twenty-eight (28) Higher Education and Research Institutions (HERIs) with a primary aim of providing shared research infrastructure.
Currently HERIN has a total of twenty-three (23) active users across seven (7) regions namely Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Dodoma, Iringa, Mbeya, Kilimanjaro and Morogoro. The last mile connectivity for the HERIN infrastructure is provided by TTCL while support for logical network is provided by TERNET. An assessment was conducted to establish cost for the replacement of Point of Present (POP) equipment and CE as it was observed to have reached end of support by December 2022. It is expected that a total of eight (8) new POP will be added to the infrastructure by the end of June 2024 for expanding the reach of infrastructure to eight new regions.
